Tattoo removal is the permanent removal of a tattoo that you no longer want. Generally, your Immune system remove foreign particles from your body, since Ink particles are too big for your Immune system to remove, your healthcare provider suggests a removal procedure depending on the different factors like Size and type of a tattoo.

Several methods are available but, the most used methods are:

  • Laser removal
  • Dermabrasion
  • Surgical excision

Laser therapy is the most widely used procedure, using a targeted light to break down tattoo ink particles which are then eliminated by Immune system. Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure which involves planning away of epidermal and dermal layer of skin that contain tattoo ink. Even though it is effective, most people eliminate this procedure because of excessive pain & long time for healing.

Surgical excision employs cutting out the tattooed skin and stitching the surrounding skin back together. It is less common than laser therapy due to its invasive nature.

Chemical peels involve topical applying of chemical solution like Trichloro acetic acid & Phenol for removing outer layer of skin that contain the tattoo. It is typically used for fading or lightening tattoos than complete removal. It is less common due to risk of Skin irritation, Scarring.

Does it hurt?

Depending up on the type of Procedure and your tolerance to Pain, there may be varying level of Pain or discomfort. How much Pain you feel will depend up on the tattoo area &its Size, type of Procedure. Your doctor may suggest giving a Pain Killer or Ointment for soothing depending on the severity of Pain.

Post- Care treatment

Proper Care after the Procedure is essential for minimizing Scarring and to prevent the possible chances of Infection.

  • Ice Packs: Using Ice packs after the procedure is responsible for minimizing the Pain & Swelling.
  • Applying Soothing Ointments: Applying the Soothing agents like Ointments or creams on the affected area will reduce the Irritation and discomfort.
  • Avoid Tight Clothing: Wearing tight clothes may irritate the area which results in irritating the area making it more Painful. Loose clothing will help your skin to breath and heals.
  • Avoid exposing to Sunlight: Avoid exposing the Operated area to direct Sunlight or wear Sunscreen in order to avoid pigmentation of your Skin & Patches.
  • Keep the area Clean and dry to prevent Infection and to fasten the healing process.

Tattoo Removal at Home

Chemical peels and Tattoo removal creams are home treatments for tattoo removal. There is no solid evidence that they completely remove a tattoo but helps in fading the ink & in worst cases, it may result in Chemical burn.
